The First Period

【Text Analysis】
In the picture of 1, Section A, the students will find different kinds of movies. First they will learn the new words, listen to the conversations, and then try to talk about the preferences.
In 2, Section A, Ben and Sally talk about their preferences about the movies. The students will learn to talk about their own preferences after listening to the conversation between Ben and Sally.

【Language Focus】
Enable the students to understand the following while they listen. They can use these while they speak
l        Ask for others’ opinions.
  Do you want to go to a movie?
  What kind of movies do you like?
l        Express preference
I want to see a …
I like …

【Teaching Procedures】
Step 1:  Check
Before starting Unit 9, the teacher can assign the students’ homework to collect the names of the movies they have known. 
Ask several students to write some names of the movies they like on the blackboard. If they can’t write them in English, ask them to write down in Chinese.
Step 2: Talk
Talk with the students about the movies they like. Then ask some students to tell the class the reason they like the movie. It can be like this:  
"Which movie do you like?"  “I like …”
“Why do you like it?”      “Because it’s very funny.”
Write down the kinds of movies on the blackboard. Then teach the students to read and spell the new words.

Step 3: Listen
(1) Listen and circle
Ask the students to listen to the conversations in 1b, Section A and circle the kinds of movies they hear in the conversations. Then check the answers.

       Boy:       Do you want to go to an action movie?
       Girl: No, I don’t. I want to go to a comedy.

 (2) Listen and repeat
Play the tape again. Ask the students to listen to each dialogue and repeat after it. This time ask the students to try to imitate the pronunciation and intonation of the recording. While the students repeat, the teacher must pay attention to their reading. Help them and correct their pronunciation and intonation when necessary. 
Step 4: Speak
(1) Read
Ask the students to practice the conversation in 1b, Section A in pairs. Then have several pairs read it aloud. Correct them when necessary.
(2) Make a conversation
Ask the students to make a similar conversation between them by using their own ideas. Write the following sentences on the blackboard. Enable the students to understand their meanings and reuse them in their dialogue.
     Do you want to go to a movie?
      Yes, I do.
      Do you want to go to a(an) …?
No, I don’t. I want to see a(an) …
Have some pairs to act out their conversations. Make sure that they can make their own conversations by using the above sentence patterns.
